Understanding the Causes, Symptoms, and How to Overcome Lordosis

Lordosis is a condition of the lower backbone (lumbar) curving inward excessively. This condition is a form of spinal abnormality that can affect anyone. Under normal conditions, each person's backbone is slightly curved in the neck, upper back, and lower back. This serves to help the body support the head, align the head with the pelvis, maintain body structure, and help move and bend easily. In patients with lordosis, the curve of the lower back is too deep. This makes the spine get excess pressure, causing pain and discomfort.

Various Causes of Lordosis

Some things that can cause lordosis are:

1. Obesity

Being overweight or obese can affect your posture and put excess pressure on your spine. This can increase the risk of lordosis.

2. Osteoporosis

Lordosis caused by osteoporosis often occurs in people who are elderly. Osteoporosis can make the lower backbone porous, making it easier to bend while holding the body's weight.

3. Pregnancy

Just like obesity, weight gain during pregnancy can also affect body posture. This condition can cause the lower backbone to become more easily curved inward. However, lordosis during pregnancy will usually disappear by itself after giving birth.

4. Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which the spine shifts from its proper position, so the bones become misaligned. This condition can make the lower backbone more curved.

5. Bad posture

Poor posture when sitting or when lifting heavy objects can also increase a person's risk of developing lordosis. In addition, there are other health conditions that can cause lordosis, namely discitis, kyphosis, arthritis, spina bifida, acondroplasia, and osteosarcoma.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Lordosis

The most common symptom of lordosis is the appearance of muscle aches. Muscle pain arises when your spine curves abnormally, thereby pulling muscles in various directions and causing muscles to become tense. In addition, there are other symptoms that can be felt by people with lordosis, including:
  • Limited movement around the neck or lower back
  • Buttocks look more prominent
  • The body feels weak
  • Numb
  • Tingling sensation
  • Less able to control urination and defecation

Steps in Treatment of Lordosis

Treatment of lordosis will usually be adjusted to the severity. Before giving treatment, the doctor will perform the following series of tests to determine the condition of lordosis experienced by the patient.
  • Question and answer.
  • Physical examination.
  • Supporting examinations, such as X-ray or MRI of the lumbar spine and sacrum area, and laboratory examination.
After knowing the diagnosis and the severity of lordosis, the doctor will provide several treatment options, including:
  • Medicines, to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Physiotherapy, to increase muscle strength and train your body's movement skills.
  • Diet program, for weight loss.
  • Surgery, for severe cases of lordosis and neurological disorders.
Although most cases of lordosis do not require immediate medical attention, you should not underestimate this condition and do a doctor's examination. If you don't get proper treatment, lordosis can cause a variety of complaints that can interfere with your comfort and activities.
